Who they are

A short write-up on each car, one paragraph apiece. We describe them on their own terms rather than picking a winner.

Profile · Mk4 1.5 EcoBlue diesel (2018-2022)

Ford Focus

C-segment hatchback, fourth generation on the C2 platform. The 1.5 EcoBlue diesel with 120 hp was delivered between 2018 and around 2022; after that the diesel disappeared from the Dutch range. Reference model for spec look-up and switch orientation from an older model. WLTP consumption around 4.4 l/100km (manufacturer figure, indicative); diesel stays economical over long distance. No new price and no buy button, we are not a marketplace.

Profile · 1.5 TSI (NX, facelift 2024)

Skoda Octavia

Spacious family liftback on the MQB platform. Strong points are the boot (600 l) and the braked towing weight (1,600 kg). The 1.5 TSI with mild-hybrid returns WLTP 5.6 l/100km; owners report 6-7 l/100km in practice (public forums, not measured by us).
